Common Ingredients

People are often unaware that these ingredients are not necessarily vegetarian.

 

Di- Glicerides:  See glicerides

 

Enzymes: These enzymes can often be animal based and enzymes may be used as a word in place of “animal rennnet”

 

Gelatin: Yougart, Jello, Sour Cream, Candy such as Skittles

 

Glycerides / Glycerine / Glycol: Many, many things, Bread, Cheeses, Crackers, ice cream, etc., etc., etc.

 

L-cystine: Bread / Dough Foods

 

Mono glicerides: See glicerides

 

Natural Flavor - This can be animal based flavor such as in the Lipton Rice packs

 

Red:  The red color can be from mashed up Beetles

 

Rennet / renin:  Cheeses

 

Sterol / Sterate / Steric Acid

 

Vitamin D: D3 which is found in milks, cereal, etc. is from lanolin or pig flesh - usually lanolin.  Horizon claims their D3 is vegetarian.  The only milks I know that do not have D3 are Trader Joe’s Cream Top Milk, and Organic Valley’s Whole Milk

 

Whey: It is a dairy product / not vegan (dairy found in breads, cookies, ice cream)
